Gaining an advantage when playing petanque

The circle has to be placed according to the rules and this week we are going to look a little closer at circle placement.

I always say “ never play the opposition on their own piste”. Now this may sound a bit odd as you do not have a choice if you are playing petanque at their venue. I do not mean literally. Most teams have the habit of playing up and down their pistes and placing the circle and jack in their preferred place. If you win the toss the first placement is critical and I would always place the circle to one side and try and play at an angle across their piste. When you win an end you can do the same thing. Ha, but you cannot put the circle anywhere, it should be placed over the jack. Well of course! Something you may not have thought of is the circle is 50cm diameter and so you could put the circle over the marked jack in a position that suits you. Here we see a circle placed over the jack. Direction of play is up and down in the photo. If you are trying to get an angle you can be 45cm off line if you wish with just a circle placement.   Worth a thought?
