OIL filled boule
A few years ago a European national team was found to be using boule filled with mercury in an elaborate method to stop a boule dead when it landed from a high lob. This unusual trick was actually using a method that had been used in the early manufacture of boule in France. The steel boule were filled with a viscous oil that helped them stop when thrown. An update in the rules in 1961 stated that these boule should be clearly marked to prevent them used in competition events as it gives the player a massive advantage. The stamping are very clear as you can see in the photo. The boule at rest is also harder to move as the oil settles to the bottom of the inner hollow and gives a Weeble effect to the boule when hit. Unfortunately, you can still find these boule in flea markets in France so keep a keen eye on your opposition and the boule they are playing with.
